SM thought to appropriate the original Plymouth stencil’s chevron motif into this circle for the ‘new’ label design. JW was inspired by the vintage Woods Extract label (shown above) that SM showed him – he was drawn to the circular design of the graphic as it echoes the shape of the cheese wheels that are made in his factory. SM specializes in vintage ephemera appropriation and researched particularly inspiring vintage labels to show JW for direction. Jesse Werner, Owner and Cheesemaker of Plymouth Artisan Cheese, joins DeliMarket TV to share the companys latest from the American Cheese Society expo in. JW came to SM with the task of creating a vintage inspired label that reflects the rich heritage of the Plymouth Cheese Factory and highlights the careful artisanal process that goes into making (and packaging!) every individual block of cheese… JW wanted to somehow incorporate the original historical stencil design of the Plymouth Cheese Factory. We are so lucky today to get a peek into her process and inspirations that went into the design, and also get a feel for how the designer and client worked together to develop the vintage-inspired graphics. I thought the packaging design was so stunning, I asked her if I could share it with you all here. Each of JW’s colorful cheese blocks (roughly the size of a thick deck of cards) are individually hand dipped in wax. It’s been a busy year at Plymouth Artisan Cheese, the award winning cheese factory situated at the edge of Vermont’s Calvin Coolidge Forest. We have big windows that look into our cheesemaking rooms. One of her latest projects is food packaging design for Plymouth Artisan Cheese by Jesse Werner. We offer free cheese samples, and a self-guided tour throughout the Plymouth Cheese Factory building. I consider her to be my mentor in many ways, as she’s the first graphic artist I’ve ever met and her work speaks to me at a visceral level. Using their signature heritage cheddar, Original Plymouth, as the basis, the husband-wife team went on to create a dynamic line of hand-waxed, cave-aged and blue cheeses that today comprise the Plymouth brand.My best friend, Sarit Melmed, is one helluva a designer. While the company's roots are steeped in the green-pastured classics of Americana, in time Jesse and Sarit sought to explore variations on their cheeses. Her fine art background enhanced the Plymouth products to a new level of aesthetic appeal. One of the oldest cheese producers in the country, the factory was founded by John Coolidge father of the 30th President of United States, Calvin Coolidge. ![]() Sarit Werner packed her bags and left the urban hustle of New York City to not only marry Jesse, but also to truly join forces with him. Plymouth Artisan Cheese is a Vermont company from the United States that produces artisanal cheese from raw cow’s milk. The antique cheese factory and its equipment were also brought back to life, the result of which became an artisanal cheese company that today crafts cheeses by hand, the way it was done over 125 years ago on the Plymouth homestead. ![]() Jesse Werner has always held a vision to preserve the working landscape of his beloved Vermont and took on the momentous task of reviving the original 1890 Coolidge-era granular curd recipe that the first European settlers brought to the new world.
